There are plenty of opening in the organized
Retail based Sectors. This should augur well for
the 50 million – strong graduate population
in the country. A majority of them, however,
do not match up to the requirements of the
retail based industry – both in terms of knowledge
as well as skills. As a result, the industry
is facing the manpower crises. So the need
of the hour is to develop expertise and
acquire job-centric skill. The aim of IARS

size of India's highly unorganized and individually small retail
trade is dose to $200 billion, nearly 14 per cent of our GDP.
IT
employs 21 million, which is approx 7% of total labor force.
China's retail trade is 8% of GDP and accounts for 6% of total
employment
India
has approx 12 million retail stores, more than rest of the world
put together.
The
per copita square fit area under retail is just to sq.ft. with
fragmented "Keerana" stores being the predominant players.
Retailing in india has remained in the unorganized seot or and
largely untouched by corporate entities till now.
Some
factors that indicate the potential of retail in india:
A consumer base
of 271 million is one of the largest in the world, forming
27% of the total population.
A high spending
community below 45 years comprises 81 percent of the
population.
A young
population with 54% population below 25 years.
Increased
literacy from 44% in 1965 to 70% in 2003.
Increase in
working women from 1.3 million in 1961 to 4.8 million in
1998.
Increase in
media penetration to 38-million cable household and
80-million TV household in 2001.
In
spite of all the above factors organized retail stands at 2% in
india compared to 80% in USA, 40% in Thailand, 55% in Malaysia and
20% in China.
